What Can I Do?
As we approach the upcoming election in November,
we are increasingly bombarded with political and social messages.
The pressures and issues can seem overwhelming at times. What
can one person do to make a difference, or even just to cope?
As far as political issues are concerned, all I will say is "Register
to vote, and vote your conscience." If you have the inclination
and energy, get involved in a political campaign or a charitable
organization.
But consider turning your attention to your own small corner of
the world. Commit random acts of kindness - help an elderly neighbor
with yard work or a trip to the grocery store. Listen to a friend
in need. Smile at a stranger, laugh at a bad joke.
Improving the world really begins with taking care of yourself.
If you feel troubled by world events, turn off the news and take
time to notice a sunrise. Have a cup of tea with quiet, count
your blessings, and be very kind to yourself. Spend 5 minutes
a day praying for or visualizing world peace. If you are the elderly
neighbor or the friend in need, practice receiving. Give someone
the gift of doing you a good turn. If you can't receive graciously,
they can't have the pleasure of giving.
Don't listen to anyone who is trying to engender fear and negativity,
whether it's a national figure or your next-door neighbor. Say,
"Thank you for sharing" and turn around and walk away.
Ask yourself, "How is this contributing to my quality of
life?" You still want to wear your seat belt- not out of
fear, but because it's a sensible precaution.

All I need to know in life, I learned from my dog:
- Always leave room in your schedule for a good nap.
- When somebody comes home, run to greet them and act happy.
- Remember to take time to smell the roses
(and trees, grass, rocks, etc.)
- Never bite when a simple growl will do.
My dog
"Anything becomes possible after you find the courage to
admit that nothing is certain."
Joan D. Vinge, "The Snow Queen"
"Are you a messenger of the Great Spirit?"
Lakota Sioux greeting
"As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in our being
able to remake our world as in being able to remake ourselves."
Ghandi
Regular Flossing, Longer Life?
My dentist tells me that studies show regular flossing can add
as much as 6 years to your life. The toxins produced by plaque
can contribute to illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, and heart
disease. And it feels so much better than having that stuff stuck
between your teeth.
Humming For Health
According to recent medical studies, humming can elevate your
mood. This is apparently due to increased oxygen flow through
the nasal cavities and into the brain. Only a few minutes a day
of humming can also reduce your risk of sinus infection. Next
time you feel a little down or congested, try humming a happy
tune.

Poems by Sue Redding
Hawk
Clear sky,
gliding high,
sharp eye.
Far-seeing,
long-knowing,
high-flying.
I don't see anything
others couldn't see -
I just have a different vantage point.
I don't fly higher
than others could -
but I know I have wings
and a willingness to soar.
Enlightenment
There once was an Irish balloonist,
A seeker and rare opportunist.
When a chance came his way,
He'd start right away,
And always got there the soonest.
A Gift of Love
I dreamed someone gave me four red roses
In a clear glass mug of water,
But I turned away from their beauty,
Obsessively searching for the perfect vase.
