When
Santa Was A Shaman
The Saami people lived above the
Arctic Circle north of Scandinavia.
In the Saami tradition, during the dark
of the Winter Solstice, the shaman
(who dressed in red), would journey up the
chimney smoke to the rooftop where his sleigh and reindeer waited. He would travel
to the North Pole to entreat the Sun God to return and bring back the light. Then
the shaman would return, journeying back down the chimney and bearing spiritual
gifts for the tribe.

Attire
of the Goddess
the
sea wears a diaphanous gown of green
in sheer gauze of foam
delicately revealing
the beauty of her depths.
Sanctuary
peace is something found in the belly
like a new life
growing
at the center of my being
the sea turtle flies serenely in her element
gazing through the green translucence
with old, slow eyes
