Mars and Venus

Several weeks ago, I received in the mail John Gray's book "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus." (I get books on tape from the State Library.)

For some reason, I was annoyed just by receiving this particular book. I didn't ask for it - the computer randomly selected it for me. I've read this before several years ago - I know this stuff. (I already know what's wrong with men - and they just need to change!) Rather than sending it back right away, I left it on my kitchen table for a few weeks, annoying me, before I finally decided to at least start reading it again - maybe I could recommend it to someone I know who's having marital problems. (I'm so helpful.)

(Sigh.) Within the first couple of chapters, Gray writes about how women often have a tendency to give unsolicited advice or constructive suggestions with the best of helpful intentions, but which men don't necessarily take too well. (I never do that, well, at least not consciously.) So to my chagrin, I immediately remembered how just the night before, Upon my first in-person meeting with a man, I'm telling him he took the long way to get to the cafe,
what route he should have taken, and the best way to get home afterwards - in the nicest possible way, of course. I'm not even going to mention how I told him which seats in the Schnitz have the best acoustics for hearing the symphony or that he shouldn't have updated a computer system during a full moon. (Oh, my gosh - "I'm only trying to help, honey.") In the immortal words of Charlie Brown, "Aaagh!" No wonder I was annoyed when the book showed up. Now I HAVE to read the whole thing again - and take notes!

Consciousness is definitely not all it's cracked up to be.
Namaste (honor the Light Within),

The first four quotations are from unknown sources:

"Transformation begins with the ability to learn."

"If I could see what's going on with myself as well as I see what's going on with others, I'd be fixed by now."

"We judge other people by their actions, but we judge ourselves by our intentions."

"Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves, for we shall never cease to be amused."

"When women are depressed they either eat or go shopping. Men invade another country." Elayne Boosler

A Gift of Love

I dreamed someone gave me four red roses
in a clear glass mug of water,
but I turned away from their beauty,
obssessively searching for the perfect vase.
-
Something Lacking

no chocolate in my life
nothing sweet and stimulating
no dessert after dinner
no treat in the afternoon
nothing smooth and rich and delicious to melt in my mouth
no luscious confection consumed simply for pleasure
none of the delightful decadence that other people have
no frivolous food at all

Happy Groundhog Day!
Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney Phil are remnants in our culture of the ancient pagan holiday, called Candlemas or Imbolc, honoring the approach of spring. February 1 marks the approximate halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. We can feel that spring is on its way - the crocuses are blooming, buds are showing on many plants, and birds and squirrels are becoming more active. Feeling restless? Maybe it's early-onset spring fever.
