Summer 2006

Water

Water is the basis of all life.  Like our planet, our bodies consist mostly of water.  To be healthy, active, and alert, we need to hydrate ourselves just as we water our plants and pets, especially in hot weather.

Are you drinking enough water every day?
Commonly, we are told 8-10 glasses of water a day.  This is about 64 fluid ounces or approximately 2 liters.  It can be helpful to add electrolyte powder, such as Emer'gen-C, which is sold in the vitamin section of many grocery stores.

  • Sorry, caffeine and alcohol don't count - they dehydrate the body.

  • Drinking water after exercise and massage helps to prevent muscle soreness by flushing lactic acids and other toxins out of the system.

  • One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters in a U-Washington study.

  • Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

  • Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

  • Dehydration Has been linked to disorders ranging from arthritis to colitis, Morning sickness, constipation and other digestion problems, depression, dementia, brain damage, Neck and back pain, migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, and of course, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

  • 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world population)

  • Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

  • In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

  • Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

  • A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

"I want to go soon and live by the pond, where I shall hear only the wind whispering among the reeds.  It will be a success if I shall have left myself behind.  But my friends ask what I will do when I get there.  Will it not be employment enough to watch the progress of the seasons?"

"The thought manifests into words,
The words manifest into the deed,
The deed becomes habit,
and the habit hardens into character.
So watch the thought and its ways with care
and let them spring from love for all beings including yourself."
