Heart Notes

Hands-Only CPR

If an adult collapses and is unresponsive, it's better to do something than nothing.  If you're untrained or unsure of your skills, call 911 then do chest compressions only.  Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is not necessary - hands-only
CPR is saving lives.  More info at AmericanHeart.org.

Good Sleep is Good for Women's Hearts

Enough good quality sleep would seem to be even more important for women than for men.  A recent study linked poor sleep to increased risk factors for heart disease in women, but not men.  It may be that testosterone somehow protects men from this particular risk.

Raise Your Hands For A Healthy Heart

Musical conductors have less heart disease than others.  Apparently, there's something beneficial about raising the hands up above the heart and waving them around.  So conduct your stereo, or dance with your arms up!

Tone Those Abs!

Belly fat has been linked to stroke, heart disease, and dementia, even if the person is not otherwise overweight.

Headache?

Headaches may be caused by muscular tension in the neck, shoulders, or back.

Neck pain may also be related to tension in the shoulders, back or even hips.

Try stretching, neck and shoulder rolls, or working the upper body in another way.  Of course, a lovely, relaxing massage can make a world of difference, too!

Have You Heard?

A man in Japan, who was pretending to be blind so he could collect disability payments, was found out when he called the police to report that he had been hit by a red car.

Only 10% of the population are left-handed, and more of them are female.

You are 60-70% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease if you have a cat.

When you put the word "the" in front of IRS, it spells "theirs."
